This weekend, JKS Wales members were invited by Jesper Markvardsen Sensei to attend the annual Kata Course at Hørsholm Karate Club in Denmark.
A highlight of the calendar and a privilege to be invited, with excellent instruction, high standards and a great atmosphere throughout.
Below is a snapshot of what we got up to 🇩🇰🥋
Friday 23 January
Gankaku – Jesper Sensei
The session focused on strong stance work, correct hip rotation, and slow, controlled movement throughout the kata. Emphasis was placed on understanding and refining the finer details within Gankaku, ensuring stability, balance, and control at every stage of the kata.
Meikyo – Yamaguchi Sensei
Attention was again given to detail and accuracy within the kata. The session included team kata practice, working in groups of three, with a focus on timing, synchronization, and maintaining consistent technique across the team.
Saturday 24 January
Hachimon – Yamaguchi Sensei
The kata was broken down in detail, with particular focus on shoulder use and relaxed rotational movement. Drills were used to reinforce correct mechanics, including Niko Ashi Dachi Gedan Barai Gyaku Tsuki with rotation and movement. Mae Geri was later added to develop flow, balance, and coordination while maintaining correct posture and relaxation.
Gojushiho Sho – Jesper Sensei
This session focused on slow, controlled movement while maintaining a consistent height throughout the kata. During faster sections, emphasis was placed on continuing forward momentum and effective use of the hips. Body positioning and posture were highlighted as critical areas that must remain controlled as speed is increased.
